H) PERSONAL INTERESTS
Green Man
I began playing the Green Man in the Mummers Play about 2007, and have since come to inhabit the role. I attended the Jack in the Green Festival in Hastings England in 2011 and annually from 2014 to the present (2025) (except 2020 and 2021, due to Covid), where I am a ‘Bogie’ – one of the inner core of Green Men who run the festival (and described in the program as ‘part man, part bush, half alcohol’).

Morris dancing
Morris dancing is a traditional English folk dance that has been danced in the villages of western England for hundreds of years. I have been a Morris dancer since the late 1970s, although I did not dance from the late 1980s until I came to Victoria in 2002.
I now dance with two sides – Hollytree Morris Dancers, a Cotswold side, and Quicksbottom, a Border side. We perform in and around Victoria and occasionally up-island and off-island. I have created several dances for each side in the past few years: Moose Highway (to a tune by Nell, one of our musicians), British Grenadiers and Drunken Sailor for Hollytree and Sharpe’s Rattle and Blackened Face and Stick for Quicksbottom.
Quicksbottom also does a Mummers Play – a traditional English village play – in the Winter, mainly at house parties and selected public events.
In May/June 2014 Quicksbottom did a 2 week tour of the West Midlands in England.
Photography
I took up outdoor photography since losing most of the sight of my left eye in my early 40’s. While this may have impaired my sight, it has not limited my vision; indeed, it has made me more keenly aware of the beauty around me and has definitely improved the quality of my life. My international travels as a consultant, as well as on vacation, have provided opportunities to photograph in many parts of the world, but many of my favourite images have also come from much closer to home, including in our own garden. I seek to create beautiful images, and in the pre-digital era I made my own colour prints to ensure I got the result I wanted. In addition to large framed or matted prints, I produced a series of art cards.
From 1999 to 2001 I opened and ran a co-op gallery for my work and that of other artists in Kleinburg. Since coming to Victoria, I have pretty much stopped my work as a commercial photographer in favour of Morris dancing, but continue to do photography for my personal pleasure.

Tallship sailing
Another benefit of losing the sight of my left eye is that it got me interested in tallship sailing. I have sailed five times as ‘voyage crew’ on the Soren Larsen, a 150 foot brigantine (four of those times in the South Pacific).
Scuba diving
I began diving in 1972 with the London Hospitals Diving Group, and at one point contemplated a career in underwater medicine. I dived often in the 1970s, and still dive occasionally, in warm waters only these days!
